Community Planning and Design (CP+D) focuses on public sector clients, bringing an effective cross-disciplinary approach to a wide variety of projects. Contemporary challenges in the American urban and suburban setting demand creative and diverse skills that weave together. We use design as a process and not just a product - rendering visible alternatives and empowering people and communities to better understand choices about their future. Planning and public process are central to our work. CP+D is committed to the genuine involvement of all stakeholders, operating on the belief that an informed citizenry provides the best foundation for collaboration. CP+D also focuses on the role of the urban dwelling in fostering healthy mixed-use and mixed-income communities. Working with non-profits and public agencies, we rethink traditional models, offering socially responsible solutions to higher density housing.

CP+D teams with other creative and highly skilled specialists in a variety of planning disciplines including transportation planning, land-use planning, public process design and facilitation, and economic analysis., As evidenced by the vision we bring to projects and the satisfaction of our clients, the success of our work is in many ways dependent on our commitment to COLLABORATION – with our professional colleagues, with staff members as well as appointed and elected officials in communities we serve, and with the many stakeholders within the public.

Recently, CP+D has moved to New Orleans. Ken Schwartz has assumed the role of Dean of Architecture at Tulane University, and Judith Kinnard has moved to Tulane University to serve as Professor of Architecture. Both are now licensed to practice architecture in Louisiana as well as Virginia, and Community Planning + Design's license and business application is pending for the state of Louisiana.

CD+D Workshop
Maurice Cox and Ken Schwartz have formed a new company to collaborate on community design and planning projects.  However, Maurice Cox is taking a leave-of-absence while he assumes a major leadership role in Washington, DC.  We look forward to his return when he completes this public service.
